Mammograms are simple and effective, but the process can still be overwhelming for patients who have not had a mammogram in the past. If you’re about to get your first mammograms, don’t panic. The process is easy and you’ll soon feel comfortable. Keep reading to learn what to expect during your appointment.

Mammogram Process

A mammogram is an image of the breast that is taken using a low-level x-ray machine. To get the image of your breast tissue, a mammograms technician will flatten your breasts for a few seconds using a specialized machine. While this process might be a little uncomfortable, the images it produces can help your doctor detect breast cancer.

Getting Comfortable and Accurate Results

There are a few things you can do to stay comfortable during your mammogram. If you are still menstruating, try not to schedule your mammograms in the week before your period. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever before your mammogram to reduce your discomfort. In order to get accurate results, do not wear deodorant or powders on the day of your mammogram as these can interfere with the imagining. If you forget about this, your doctor will have wipes available and you can wipe off your deodorant beforehand.
